Nursing - Overview

Overview

The programs in the nursing cluster prepare students for careers in the professional nursing profession. For some programs, this means becoming a licensed or registered nurse. You care for patients with illnesses ranging from a minor cold to heart disease. You can work in a variety of medical settings, including hospitals and doctor's offices. You can even work in private homes. For other programs, you may advance your skills as s nurse practitioner, nurse anesthetist, or as an administrator.

Some programs prepare you to become either a licensed practical nurse (LPN)) or registered nurse (RN). In general, LPN programs are shorter, and allow you to work under the supervision of RNs and doctors. RN programs last between three and four years, and are becoming more preferred by employers.

Others programs prepare you to advance your nursing skills after you have completed your RN. Nursing administration teaches people to run and manage nursing units. Nurse anesthetists administer anesthesia. Nurse practitioners give primary care to patients of all ages. Finally, nurse midwives provide care to pregnant women and their newborns.
